Islamabad: On the occasion of World Polio Day, Umar Rehman Malik has called for renewed and coordinated national and international efforts to eradicate polio from Pakistan, stressing that every child deserves a healthy and secure future free from this preventable disease.
He emphasized that achieving a polio-free Pakistan requires collective responsibility, sustained public awareness and the active participation of every segment of society. He urged parents to ensure that their children receive polio drops during every vaccination campaign, underscoring that consistent immunization is essential to protecting children against the potentially crippling disease.
Umar Rehman Malik highlighted the importance of building public confidence in vaccination, strengthening community engagement and extending immunization services to every child, particularly those living in underserved and hard-to-reach areas. He said that cooperation with frontline health workers remains crucial to overcoming barriers and ensuring that no child is left unprotected.
Recalling the historic contribution of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto, who launched Pakistan’s first nationwide polio vaccination campaign in 1994, he said her initiative marked a significant milestone in the country’s efforts to protect children from polio. He noted that her vision continues to inspire efforts towards a healthier Pakistan.
He further observed that Aseefa Bhutto Zardari is carrying forward her mother’s legacy with dedication and commitment, contributing to the ongoing mission of safeguarding children from this preventable disease. He stressed that continuity of leadership, effective public health policies and sustained vaccination efforts are essential to achieving the ultimate goal of polio eradication.
Paying tribute to the polio workers who have lost their lives while performing their duties, Umar Rehman Malik said their sacrifices must never be forgotten. He acknowledged the courage and commitment of frontline workers who continue to serve communities under challenging circumstances to ensure that children receive life-saving vaccines.
He stressed that the families of these workers deserve meaningful, long-term support, including financial assistance and social protection. He also called for stronger security arrangements to protect vaccination teams, enabling them to carry out their responsibilities without fear and ensuring the uninterrupted continuation of eradication campaigns.
Umar Rehman Malik urged government institutions, health authorities, community leaders, parents and international development partners to strengthen coordination and maintain consistent efforts until polio is completely eradicated from Pakistan. He emphasized that public cooperation, reliable healthcare services and unwavering commitment from all stakeholders are indispensable to achieving this national objective.
Concluding his message, he said that protecting children from polio is not merely a public health priority but a shared national responsibility and a vital investment in Pakistan’s future. He called upon every citizen to play an active role in supporting vaccination campaigns and spreading awareness, expressing the hope that collective determination and sustained action would help secure a polio-free future for generations to come.
