US State Department launches online portal to report suspected visa fraud

Washington: The US Department of State this week launched an online portal allowing members of the public to report suspected fraud and misuse involving US visas, as Washington steps up efforts to detect and prevent fraudulent attempts to enter the United States.

The new online tip portal is intended to provide a convenient channel for individuals to submit information about suspected visa fraud directly to the State Department for review and possible action.

According to the department, information provided by members of the public has contributed to the identification of visa fraud cases. It said tens of thousands of people suspected of visa fraud had been identified and held accountable during President Donald Trump’s second term, with public tips playing a role in some cases.

The initiative comes as the State Department’s Bureau of Consular Affairs continues to strengthen fraud detection and prevention measures aimed at identifying attempts to obtain US visas through fraudulent means or for purposes that violate US law.

The department said suspected visa fraud can take a variety of forms, including the submission of falsified documents or misleading travel plans. Other examples cited include brokers arranging sham marriages, the use of shell companies, fabricated employment offers and participation in or facilitation of birth tourism.

US authorities said such practices can have consequences beyond individual visa applications, arguing that fraudulent activity can undermine the integrity of the US immigration and visa system and create broader concerns relating to communities, the economy, employment and national security.

The State Department said it would continue enforcing US laws relating to visa fraud and misuse and would take action against individuals found to have violated those laws. Possible measures include visa revocation and referral of suspected fraudulent activity to relevant law-enforcement authorities for further investigation.

The department urged members of the public who have information about suspected visa fraud or misuse to report it through its newly launched online portal.

The initiative represents another step in the US government’s broader effort to strengthen the integrity of the visa process and identify fraudulent applications and schemes before they result in improper travel to the United States.
