Islamabad: Foreign Secretary Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad this week held talks with the Romanian ambassador and fellow European Union ambassadors on strengthening Pakistan’s political and economic relations with the European bloc, with a focus on trade expansion, economic cooperation and improved connectivity.
The meeting provided an opportunity to explore ways to deepen Pakistan–EU engagement, make greater use of the European Union’s Generalised Scheme of Preferences Plus (GSP+) trade arrangement and identify avenues for closer cooperation on shared priorities.
The Romanian ambassador, accompanied by other EU ambassadors, expressed Romania’s readiness to strengthen bilateral political relations and economic cooperation with Pakistan, highlighting the importance of translating diplomatic engagement into practical initiatives.
A key focus of the discussions was the operationalisation of the agreement between the ports of Constan?a and Karachi, which could strengthen maritime connectivity, facilitate commercial exchanges and create new opportunities for businesses in both countries.
“Building stronger partnerships through dialogue, trade and connectivity is the way forward,” the Romanian ambassador said.
The talks also highlighted the broader potential for Pakistan to expand its engagement with European partners through trade facilitation, investment and stronger commercial links.
The meeting was attended by Additional Secretary Ayesha Ali, Director General Europe I Ishtiak Ahmed Akil and other senior diplomats.
Pakistan’s engagement with the European Union remains important for expanding export opportunities and strengthening economic ties. The GSP+ arrangement provides eligible Pakistani products with preferential access to the European market, making effective utilisation of the facility a significant element of Islamabad’s economic diplomacy.
The discussions underscored the importance of sustained diplomatic dialogue and practical cooperation in advancing Pakistan’s relations with European countries, with maritime connectivity and trade emerging as key areas of potential collaboration.
