Pakistan secures sweeping UN support for three resolutions on arms control, nuclear security

Islamabad: Pakistan has secured significant international support for its disarmament and arms control initiatives, with the First Committee of the 81st United Nations General Assembly adopting three Pakistan-sponsored resolutions on nuclear security assurances, conventional arms control and regional confidence-building measures.

The adoption of the resolutions by the UN body responsible for disarmament and international security reflects sustained international recognition of Pakistan’s longstanding diplomatic efforts to promote regional stability, prevent an escalation of security risks and strengthen multilateral cooperation on arms control.

One of the resolutions, titled “Confidence-building measures in the regional and subregional context”, was adopted without a vote, demonstrating broad consensus among UN member states on the importance of dialogue, cooperation and confidence-building mechanisms in addressing regional security challenges.

Another resolution, “Conventional arms control at the regional and subregional levels”, received overwhelming support, with 180 countries voting in its favour, highlighting strong international backing for cooperative approaches to regulating conventional weapons and reducing the risks of regional conflicts.

Earlier, the committee also adopted Pakistan’s resolution titled “Conclusion of effective international arrangements to assure non-nuclear-weapon States against the use or threat of use of nuclear weapons”. The resolution received 122 votes in favour, with no country voting against it, reinforcing international support for legally effective security assurances to states that do not possess nuclear weapons.

Pakistan has been consistently advocating these issues at the United Nations for several decades, placing particular emphasis on conventional arms control, regional disarmament, confidence-building measures and credible international guarantees against the use or threat of use of nuclear weapons against non-nuclear-weapon states.

The latest developments carry added significance at a time when growing geopolitical tensions and the erosion of the existing international arms control architecture have heightened concerns over global and regional security. Against this backdrop, the three resolutions seek to promote practical, inclusive and cooperative mechanisms for reducing military risks, preventing misunderstandings and fostering greater trust among nations.

Through these initiatives, Pakistan has continued to emphasise the importance of multilateral engagement, regional dialogue and collective efforts to address emerging security challenges. The strong support received by the resolutions also highlights the continued relevance of Pakistan’s proposals in international deliberations on disarmament and global peace.

The outcomes reaffirm Pakistan’s sustained diplomatic engagement at the United Nations and its efforts to advance a cooperative approach towards international security, regional stability and a more predictable global arms control environment.
