Islamabad: Pakistan and the United States this week agreed to deepen cooperation in the maritime sector, focusing on port development, investment opportunities, trade facilitation, and expansion of the blue economy, according to an official statement issued on Wednesday.
The discussions took place during a meeting between Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry and US Chargé d’Affaires Natalie A. Baker in Islamabad.
During the meeting, the maritime affairs minister highlighted the strategic importance of Pakistan’s ports and coastal resources and invited US investors to explore opportunities in port infrastructure, shipping, logistics, and related services.
Both sides reviewed areas of potential collaboration including strengthening port infrastructure, improving logistics systems, and enhancing regional and international trade connectivity. Officials said the two countries have agreed in principle to establish a joint working group to coordinate future cooperation and investment initiatives in the maritime sector.
The US diplomat expressed Washington’s interest in expanding economic engagement with Pakistan, particularly in maritime development and sustainable use of ocean resources. She also acknowledged Pakistan’s role in supporting regional peace and stability.
The meeting concluded with both sides reaffirming their commitment to expanding bilateral cooperation in maritime affairs, trade, and investment, with a focus on identifying new avenues for long-term economic partnership and sustainable growth.
