Islamabad: Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad this week underscored the importance of inter-civilisational dialogue in promoting mutual understanding, cooperation and global peace amid growing international challenges.
Speaking at a high-level event marking the International Day of Dialogue among Civilisations, Ambassador Ahmad said meaningful dialogue and diplomacy remain essential tools for overcoming differences and building trust among nations.
“At this critical juncture of history, when global peace and harmony are imperiled by myriad challenges, the significance of inter-civilisational dialogue cannot be overemphasised,” he said.
The ambassador stressed that dialogue and diplomacy have historically enabled societies to transcend divisions, foster mutual respect and chart a path toward shared progress and development.
Highlighting Pakistan’s unique heritage, Ambassador Ahmad described the country as a “melting pot of many civilisations and religions,” reflecting centuries of cultural and religious diversity.
He noted that the United Nations recognises the close relationship between international peace and dialogue among civilisations, cultures and faiths, and reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to advancing these objectives.
“As a committed partner, Pakistan will continue its engagement with the United Nations and all member states to advance our shared goals of dialogue among civilisations, cultures and faiths for global peace and prosperity,” he said.
The envoy added that interfaith harmony, peaceful coexistence, diversity, pluralism and dialogue are not only defining features of Pakistani society but also key pillars of the country’s foreign policy.
Ambassador Ahmad also recalled a UN General Assembly resolution co-sponsored by Pakistan and the Philippines titled “Promotion of Interreligious and Intercultural Dialogue, Understanding and Cooperation for Peace,” which was adopted by consensus on May 20.
The resolution reflects growing international recognition of the role of dialogue and mutual understanding in addressing global challenges and strengthening peaceful relations among nations.
