Islamabad: King Charles III this week welcomed Pakistan’s national men’s cricket team at Clarence House, offering words of encouragement to the players as they face a difficult Test series against England.
The meeting brought together members of the Pakistan squad, coaching and support staff and Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi at the historic royal residence in London.
Among those attending were Pakistan captain Babar Azam, Shan Masood, Mohammad Abbas, Abdullah Shafique, Azan Awais, Sajid Khan and Mohammad Ali. White-ball head coach Mike Hesson and Director of the High-Performance Centre Aaqib Javed were also present.
The meeting came at a challenging point in Pakistan’s tour of England, with the visitors trailing 2-0 in the three-match series. The final Test is scheduled to be played at Edgbaston in Birmingham from September 9 to 13.
During his interaction with the cricketers, King Charles spoke to members of the Pakistan team and encouraged them ahead of the decisive final fixture. The royal engagement provided an unusual moment of diplomacy and sport, bringing the Pakistani players face-to-face with the British monarch during their tour.
Pakistan captain Babar Azam, representing the national team, presented the King with a cricket bat signed by members of the squad. The meeting was also attended by Pakistan’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom.
The royal family subsequently shared photographs and glimpses of the encounter on its official social media account, highlighting the visit by the Pakistan team to Clarence House.
The meeting comes as Pakistan prepares for one final opportunity to salvage something from its Test campaign in England. Having already lost the opening two matches, the visitors will enter the Edgbaston Test seeking a strong performance and a result that could provide a positive conclusion to the tour.
For the players, however, the Clarence House visit offered a welcome break from the pressure of international cricket. The interaction with King Charles also underscored the enduring sporting and people-to-people links between Pakistan and the United Kingdom.
The Pakistan team’s visit to the royal residence added a ceremonial dimension to an otherwise intensely competitive tour, with the players now turning their attention back to the cricket field and the final Test.
