Islamabad: Portugal has signalled its intention to broaden engagement with Pakistan across a wide range of economic and strategic sectors, as senior officials from both countries concluded the fourth round of Pakistan–Portugal Bilateral Political Consultations in Islamabad with a renewed commitment to expanding bilateral cooperation.
The Portuguese delegation was led by Ambassador Helena Malcata, Director-General for Foreign Policy, while Pakistan’s delegation was headed by Ambassador Ayesha Ali, Additional Secretary (Europe). The consultations formed part of the two countries’ regular diplomatic dialogue aimed at strengthening political, economic and institutional ties.
Portugal used the consultations to underscore its interest in expanding cooperation beyond traditional diplomatic engagement, with discussions focusing on opportunities in trade, investment, labour mobility, agriculture, renewable energy, information technology, education and cultural exchanges.
The breadth of the agenda reflected Lisbon’s growing interest in enhancing its partnership with Pakistan at a time when both countries are seeking to diversify economic cooperation and promote greater business-to-business engagement.
During the talks, the two sides conducted a comprehensive review of bilateral relations and identified new avenues for collaboration in sectors considered vital for sustainable economic growth and technological development. Trade and investment featured prominently, alongside discussions on facilitating labour mobility and strengthening cooperation in emerging industries such as renewable energy and digital technologies.
The consultations also addressed regional and international developments, with both delegations exchanging views on key global issues and discussing closer coordination in multilateral forums, highlighting a shared commitment to constructive diplomatic engagement.
As part of the visit, the Portuguese delegation also called on Pakistan’s Foreign Secretary, reaffirming Lisbon’s commitment to maintaining regular high-level contacts and strengthening institutional cooperation between the two foreign ministries.
The latest consultations underscore Portugal’s expanding diplomatic outreach in South Asia and its interest in developing stronger economic and political ties with Pakistan. Officials from both countries reaffirmed their commitment to sustained dialogue, deeper bilateral engagement and practical cooperation across sectors with significant potential for long-term mutual benefit.
The meeting concluded with both sides expressing confidence that regular political consultations would continue to serve as an important mechanism for advancing Pakistan-Portugal relations and translating diplomatic goodwill into broader economic and strategic cooperation.
