New Italian envoy Ambassador Ugo Ciarlatani pledges to deepen strategic, economic ties with Pakistan

Islamabad: Newly appointed Italian Ambassador to Pakistan Ugo Ciarlatani formally assumed his diplomatic responsibilities on Wednesday, pledging to strengthen Italy’s strategic partnership with Pakistan by expanding cooperation in trade, investment, culture, education and innovation.

In his first public message after taking office, Ambassador Ciarlatani described Pakistan as a country of “significant importance” for Italy and the broader South Asian region, saying bilateral relations rest on a solid foundation of political dialogue, economic engagement and longstanding people-to-people links.

The envoy said advancing Italy’s presence in Pakistan would be among his top priorities during his tenure. He pledged to work closely with the Italian Consulate General in Karachi, the Italian Trade Agency (ICE), the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation and public and private institutions in both countries to unlock new opportunities for collaboration.

Highlighting Pakistan’s economic potential, Ambassador Ciarlatani said the country’s youthful population and expanding market present attractive prospects for Italian businesses and investors. He identified energy, infrastructure, agribusiness, engineering, textiles, technology, vocational training and sustainable development as key sectors for future cooperation.

The ambassador also underscored the importance of strengthening commercial diplomacy by encouraging greater engagement between Italian and Pakistani companies, universities, research institutions and cultural organisations.

Beyond trade and investment, Ambassador Ciarlatani said Italy would continue to promote cultural diplomacy as a pillar of bilateral relations, citing Italy’s strengths in language, archaeology, heritage, design, fashion, cinema, music, science and higher education as powerful tools for fostering mutual understanding.

He said special emphasis would be placed on expanding opportunities for young people through student exchanges, academic partnerships, scientific collaboration and professional mobility, reflecting both countries’ shared interest in developing human capital and innovation.

The new ambassador also announced plans to further enhance consular services for Italian nationals living in Pakistan as well as Pakistani citizens seeking visas and other embassy services.

Ambassador Ciarlatani expressed confidence that Italy and Pakistan could elevate their partnership through sustained engagement and practical cooperation, saying he looked forward to opening new avenues of collaboration that would deliver tangible benefits for the people of both countries.

Italy and Pakistan maintain longstanding diplomatic relations and cooperate across a range of sectors, including trade, development, education and culture, while the sizeable Pakistani diaspora in Italy continues to serve as an important bridge between the two countries.
