Karachi: Sindh is seeking to deepen its economic engagement with Italy, with Sindh Municipal Minister Syed Nasser Hussain Shah inviting Italian public and private-sector entities to explore investment opportunities in the province.
The proposal came during a meeting between Shah and Italian Consul in Karachi Fabrizio Bielli this week during which the two sides exchanged views on matters of mutual interest and discussed prospects for stronger cooperation.
The Sindh minister briefed the Italian diplomat on the provincial government’s ongoing development initiatives and future projects, highlighting what he described as the continued focus on development under the leadership of Pakistan Peoples Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari.
Shah emphasised that Sindh offered considerable opportunities for foreign investors, describing the province as a fertile ground for investment across a range of sectors.
He particularly encouraged the Italian Consulate to identify and facilitate engagement with Italian companies, institutions and other public and private entities interested in investing in Sindh.
The minister said Pakistan and Italy enjoyed cordial relations and stressed the importance of translating those longstanding ties into greater economic cooperation.
For Sindh, attracting Italian investment could provide opportunities not only for capital inflows but also for technology transfer, technical expertise, joint ventures and access to international markets.
Italy’s strong industrial base and expertise across manufacturing, infrastructure, agriculture, energy, technology and other sectors could potentially complement Sindh’s economic and development priorities.
The meeting also reflected a broader effort to strengthen links between provincial governments and foreign diplomatic missions, particularly in areas where international partnerships can support development projects and private-sector activity.
Shah used the meeting to highlight the Sindh government’s development agenda and its efforts to advance projects aimed at improving infrastructure and economic activity across the province.
With Karachi serving as Pakistan’s largest commercial centre and a major gateway for international trade, Sindh remains central to the country’s economic landscape.
The province’s large population, industrial base, agricultural potential and strategic coastline offer a diverse range of opportunities for foreign investors.
The minister’s invitation to Italian businesses therefore seeks to move bilateral engagement beyond traditional diplomatic relations towards a more commercially oriented partnership.
Pakistan and Italy have maintained friendly relations over the years, supported by substantial people-to-people contacts and a Pakistani community in Italy.
Greater interaction between businesses, investors, institutions and provincial authorities could provide a broader foundation for economic cooperation.
At the conclusion of the meeting, Shah thanked Consul Fabrizio Bielli for his engagement and presented him with a traditional gift of the Sindh government along with a traditional cap.
The gesture underscored the cordial atmosphere of the meeting as both sides explored ways to give greater economic substance to Pakistan-Italy relations, particularly through increased Italian investment and business cooperation in Sindh.
