Islamabad: Pakistan this week voiced deep concern over the worsening humanitarian consequences of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, calling for an immediate ceasefire and a renewed commitment to diplomacy as the United Nations Security Council convened an emergency session to discuss the escalating hostilities.
Addressing the 15-member Security Council during the meeting requested by Ukraine, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, warned that the intensification of military operations was exacting a devastating toll on civilians while also threatening critical global food and energy infrastructure.
The Pakistani envoy stressed that the repercussions of the conflict extend far beyond the battlefield, disproportionately affecting developing countries through disruptions in food supplies, energy markets and international trade.
“The ripple effects of such actions negatively impact lives and livelihoods far beyond the conflict zone, especially in the Global South,” Ambassador Asim told the Council, underscoring Pakistan’s concern over the wider economic and humanitarian implications of the war.
His remarks came after senior UN officials briefed the Security Council on the deteriorating situation in Ukraine, warning that intensified attacks, particularly on Black Sea ports and maritime infrastructure, were disrupting global shipping routes, undermining food security and increasing risks for millions dependent on grain exports from the region.
Pakistan also expressed alarm over reports of attacks targeting humanitarian workers and facilities supporting relief operations.
“We are alarmed by the reported targeting of humanitarian actors and associated infrastructure,” Ambassador Asim said, describing attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure as “reprehensible.”
Reaffirming Pakistan’s longstanding support for the protection of civilians during armed conflicts, the envoy urged all parties to fully comply with their obligations under International Humanitarian Law. He cautioned that violations of these legal commitments not only deepen human suffering but also fuel mistrust, heighten the risk of further escalation and diminish prospects for a negotiated settlement.
Calling for restraint and meaningful diplomatic engagement, Pakistan reiterated that dialogue remains the only sustainable path towards ending the conflict and restoring peace and stability in the region.
