Italy finish 2nd in medals table at track cycling worlds

Rome: Italy this week finished second in the medals table at the track cycling world championships, with Elia Viviani retaining his title in the elimination event on Sunday to take the Azzurri’s golden tally up to four.

After setting a new record for the hour, Filippo Ganna continued his hot form by beating his compatriot Jonathan Milan on Friday to claim the individual pursuit crown with a world record time of 3:59.636 on Friday.

Martina Fidanza had gotten the Azzurri off to a winning start by taking gold in the women’s scratch event.

Fidanza was also part of the group that triumphed in the women’s Team Pursuit, along with Elisa Balsamo, Chiara Consonni and Vittoria Guazzini.

Italy, who also won three silvers, was only bettered in the medals table by the Netherlands, who won 10 medals – four golds, four silvers and two bronzes.
