PPP-HRC, SBF organises seminar on International Democracy Day

Islamabad: On the occasion of International Democracy Day, the Shaheed Bhutto Foundation and the Pakistan People’s Party Human Rights Cell collaborated to organize a seminar this week.
The event saw the active participation of distinguished individuals from various backgrounds, including political figures.
During the seminar, Malaika Raza highlighted the significant role that the youth of Pakistan has played in the country’s democracy. She emphasized that students and youth leaders have consistently been at the forefront of the struggle for democracy, their unwavering dedication propelling our democratic journey forward.
Reflecting on Pakistan’s history, Raza acknowledged the special place held by the PPP and Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto. She noted that students rallied behind Bhutto, recognizing his vision for a democratic Pakistan.
Malika Reza, the General Secretary of the People’s Party Human Rights Cell, addressed the seminar, emphasizing that Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto laid the foundation for democracy in Pakistan. Under his leadership, the first constitution was crafted, embodying democratic values. Furthermore, Reza highlighted the sacrifices made by the late Benazir Bhutto, who gave her life in the pursuit of preserving democracy.
Reza also mentioned the contributions of Asif Zardari, who enhanced democracy through the 18th amendment, and Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, who continues to empower youth and strengthen democracy.
The seminar underscored that democracy is not merely a form of governance but a way of life. It empowers individuals, protects their rights, and ensures equal opportunities for all.
The importance of safeguarding democracy was emphasized, particularly in the face of challenges such as populism, polarization, and disinformation. The role of civil society, media, and human rights defenders was recognized as crucial in holding governments accountable.
In conclusion, the seminar served as a platform to acknowledge the contributions and sacrifices made by various individuals and to renew the commitment to protect and strengthen democracy in Pakistan.
