Islamabad: Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Poverty Alleviation and Social Safety Faisal Karim Kundi said this week that Imran Khan, the leader of the Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI), would shortly apply for asylum in the United States.

At a news conference, Kundi said: “I have been told by my sources that Imran Khan will soon apply for political asylum in America.”

He added: “Soon, we will see news flashing on our TV screens that Imran Khan has applied for political asylum. I want US congressmen to question Imran Khan about the legal actions that are being taken against him in the US and the UK. Khan is attempting to flee to America rather than the UK because he is unable to get there.”

Following Khan’s arrest on May 9 — a day dubbed “Black Day” — party members set fire to and destroyed military buildings, including the General Headquarters in Rawalpindi.

Moreover, several party leaders and lawmakers — including Shireen Mazari, Aamir Mehmood Kiani, Malik Amin Aslam, Mahmood Moulvi, Aftab Siddiqui, and Fayyaz ul Hassan Chohan among others —publicly denounced the attacks on the state installations and announced leaving the former ruling party since the May 9 vandalism.
