Mancini to offer surprise Italy call-up to FCSB striker Compagno
Rome: Roberto Mancini is preparing his Italy squad for the upcoming Euro qualifiers and will reportedly give FCSB forward Andrea Compagno his first call-up.
The Azzurri will face England and Malta in their first two Euro 2024 qualifiers, scheduled for March 23 and March 26, their first outings after missing out on the World Cup in Qatar.
Mancini remained in his role as head coach to oversee a new era for Italy, who again need to rise from the ashes after their disastrous World Cup qualification play-off loss to North Macedonia last year.
FCSB general manger Mihai Stoica told Orange Sport that “we have a player in the reigning European champion national team, Compagno in the Italian national team,” seemingly confirming Mancini’s decision to add the 26-year-old to his Azzurri squad.
The Palermo-born striker has been on fire for FCSB in the Romanian SuperLiga this season, scoring 16 goals in 24 matches. He joined the club last summer from Universitatea Craiova in a deal worth around €1.5m.
When speaking to TMW, Compagno revealed his desire to join a club in Italy, saying that he “hopes to make it to Serie A” one day.
