US has no role in China’s Xizang affairs: Beijing

Beijing: The US has no legitimacy and influence in China’s Xizang affairs and its act to appoint a new “special coordinator for Tibet” is an awkward move, and since the current development in Xizang has received a huge amount of achievements, the US and the separatist Dalai Lama clique don’t stand any chance of meddling in the peace and stability in the region, said a senior Chinese expert.

The US this week named Undersecretary of State Uzra Zeya as “special coordinator for Tibet,” and the Chinese Foreign Ministry responded later.

“Xizang-related affairs are purely China’s internal affairs and China will never allow any external forces to interfere,” said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian at the routine press conference.

The Chinese government has consistently opposed the establishment of the “Special Coordinator for Tibet” by the US and will never accept it, he noted.

“We urge the US to honor its commitment of recognizing Xizang as part of China and not supporting ‘Tibet Independence’ with concrete actions,” Zhao said. “The Chinese government will continue to take all necessary measures to resolutely safeguard sovereignty, security, and development interests.”

The position of “US Special Coordinator for Tibet” first established in 1997 was purely serving the US purpose to meddle in China’s internal affairs and, more fundamentally, US attempts to separate Xizang from China, said Zhu Weiqun, former head of the Ethnic and Religious Affairs Committee of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, told the Global Times on Tuesday.

“The establishment of this position is contrary to international conventions,” Zhu noted.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Zeya would seek to “promote dialogue between China and Tibet’s spiritual leader-in-exile, the Dalai Lama, or democratically elected Tibetan leaders.”

Zeya will lead US efforts “to preserve the religious, cultural, and linguistic heritage of Tibetans who are facing human rights abuses and challenges to their livelihood and environment,” Blinken said in a tweet.

Blinken is nonsense, and his words are pointless. Being appointed as the “special coordinator” will only make Zeya lose her chance to enter Xizang, so there is no chance for her to play any meaningful role, Zhu said.

Although the Chinese central government had some dialogues with the Dalai Lama clique in the past, these are not the US’ business, and China will not allow the US to play any role in the dialogues, Zhu noted, stressing that “Blinken’s hope of using the ‘special coordinator” to “promote dialogue is completely delusional, nonsense and pointless.”

“Xizang is an inalienable part of China’s territory, and the central government has a complete concept of the region’s development and stability, rich experience, and a complete set of practices. No matter the Dalai clique’s separatist attempt to disrupt Xizang’s development and stability under the central administration, or the US’ attempt to interfere in Xizang affairs over the years, such as the riots in Lhasa in 2008, have all ended in failure,” Zhu said.

Zhu said China is fully confident, and if anything happens within the Dalai Lama clique, such as the death of the Dalai Lama, China will not make any change on its policy on Xizang which has been proved to be effective and correct.

“We will not allow the Dalai Lama clique to damage the stability of Xizang and the sovereignty of the country. This consistent stance will not change,” he added.
